“International students’ letter regarding fall planning”

On July 6, we received news describing Princeton’s plans for inviting incoming freshmen and rising juniors to campus this fall. As international first-years, we are excited at the prospect of being able to go to campus and connect with the vibrant Princeton community. Due to the present situation, though, several questions and concerns have been raised by the incoming cohort of international students.

Since Princeton will be conducting hybrid learning this fall and because, as international students, we are required to take at least one in-person class to be on campus, we propose that there be a mandatory in-person class for incoming first-year and third-year international students who plan on residential learning. Examples are: freshman seminars, junior seminars, writing seminars, lab courses, design courses, small precepts, and other small-sized courses that might be available this year. Essentially, the incoming cohort of international students and international juniors would be able to choose from one of the above mentioned options.

As it stands, the new Course Offerings will only be available July 20, and whether courses are in-person will not be announced until mid to late August. We request an accelerated timeline for the availability of this information to assist with international students’ decision-making.

We urge the Davis International Center to send the new I-20s as soon as possible, whether virtually or physically. Given that visa issuances have been suspended and given the queue that has accumulated so far, it is likely that we won’t receive our visas in time for the start of the semester even if we applied now. If the I-20s are sent in physical format, we would like to ask for them to be shipped without additional costs; as International students, we already have various additional costs, including the visa payment fee, SEVIS fee, and the increasing price of traveling. Adding the price of shipping another I-20 to this list would be of great financial burden to many international families already economically affected by the current situation.

We ask that the University make an exception for enrolled international students who begin their studies this fall and extend the window of arrival to campus until mid-October. Furthermore, we ask that these students be granted the option of living on campus for both semesters. Under the new SEVP rules, this cohort of international students would also choose from one of the aforementioned options of in-person classes for the spring semester as well. This exception would be beneficial for several students that cannot simply return to their home countries during these unusual circumstances or for students for which traveling back home would be a health hazard to themselves or their families. The option of staying on campus for both semesters is also especially important since students need to be enrolled for 12 months prior to applying for OPT; if internationals are forced to leave the school for even one semester, they will become ineligible. This will seriously jeopardize future employment opportunities. We additionally propose that if we are forced out of campus this spring, the Davis International Center make an exception this year to issue the CPT even if a student is only on campus for one semester.

If schools must shut down as they did in March, what accommodations or arrangements will be made for international students? Many students ended up having a difficult time finding places to stay and couldn’t afford to come home or couldn’t get home because borders had shut. Will there be updates to the health insurance that are applicable to international students with clauses that cover pandemics? [1]

Several rising international sophomores and seniors are staying in the United States this summer because of internships or travel restrictions. Since sophomores and seniors are currently not allowed to return to campus in the Fall, the ICE ruling means that we will be soon forced to embark on an odyssey of repatriation or face deportation consequences. Even though these classes (2023 and 2021) can technically return to campus in the spring, the grave global situation means that it would be extremely precarious for them to come back if they were forced out of the country this fall. Some have career-critical internships and networking activities that will work out logistically only if they stay in the United States. We would like the University to ensure that international sophomores and seniors who are currently in the United States can find a place to stay in the fall. [2]

We request that housing confirmations and gap year application deadlines are extended for international freshmen, since we won’t have a confirmation on whether or not we will be able to go to campus until at least August, according to the Davis International Center.

We also propose that international students be given a guarantee that, if we choose to defer this year, we can join as the Class of 2025. We understand that there are other freshmen who will simply choose to stay at home, but, as international students, this choice may be largely forced on us because of travel restrictions and difficulty in obtaining a visa. Some of us do not have favorable working conditions at home, and it would be very difficult to engage in online learning. Even though this is not a decision made lightly, for some, taking a gap year is a better option than not being able to engage fully in classes and failing. The fact that we may have to wait two years or more to re-join is deterring people from deferring because of the risk of poor academic performance. By guaranteeing a spot in 2025 for international students who choose to defer this year, we will have the peace of mind that our education will be like the world standard Princeton promises to all, without having to wait more than two years to receive it.

Princeton’s international students have always been a key part of the vibrant academic and social community the University is greatly known for. Dismissing them during these times would be of great disservice to Princeton as a whole. As an incoming cohort of freshmen, we would love to have the same opportunities to experience campus life, intellectual stimulation, and invigorating in-person lessons as our domestic student counterparts.

With best regards,

Princeton University International Students

“Business students tackle technology issues, from improving driver safety to streamlining databases”

Students in Business Technology Management Field Project (BTMA 455) focus on effectively putting software and systems to work, providing competitive advantages for organizations. In March 2020 these students, who will be building careers solving technology problems, had to pivot quickly and use their computer expertise to finish off their winter semester classes.

BTMA 455 is a senior course that focuses on experiential learning, working with the business community to solve real-world issues. Students learn and overcome the challenges in finding and implementing the right solutions. Although in-person classes for BTMA 455 were suspended on Friday, March 13, 2020 due to precautions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the experiential learning experience continued. Having already met their organizations, students had to develop and deliver their plans online.

“We were remote from our client anyways, so all information was transmitted over the internet,” says Tony Zhu, a third-year Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in business technology management. His team worked with Capital Pressure, a company specializing in the transportation of fluids for the oil and gas sector located in Sundre, Alta.

Being over an hour away from Calgary, connecting online for the final presentation saved time for the Capital Pressure contacts. “The online format functioned very well technically to present the information, both visually and with the narrative,” says Greg Campkin, general manager, Capital Pressure.

“There are still pieces of any interaction where personal contact functions better; we are still learning lessons about virtual communication during this pandemic.” Zhu highlighted the change in group dynamics in online meetings as opposed in-person as one of the obstacles he and his fellow students had to overcome.

The economic development officer for the town of Sundre forwarded the application for this experiential project through to Capital Pressure. The transportation company took advantage of the opportunity to find a new, safety-focused in-vehicle monitoring system (IVMS) to further enhance driving safety and training, and to prepare for new regulations expected in the next year.

“The students first captured the essence of why and how an in-vehicle monitoring system can improve the safety of our roadways followed by a prioritized recommendation of systems available in the marketplace,” says Campkin. “We would recommend other organizations get involved to make the connection between today’s business and future leaders, outside of the fact that you received a very valuable report.”

Not simply implementing technology

Students learned through the consulting projects that solving technology issues is not as simple as plugging in a new device or installing software.

“It is one thing to read the skills in a textbook, but to use concepts and strategies that they teach you in classes taken throughout your degree, is a unique learning experience I believe all students should have the opportunity of having,” says Mackenzie Kreutzer, a third-year Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in business technology management. Her group worked with MEG Energy to create a data migration implementation plan.

Two separate databases were the challenge for MEG Energy. Students worked to develop plans for data cleaning, analysis and transference. The research and report will form the basis of the implementation plan as MEG Energy streamlines the two databases.

“The best part about this experience was MEG’s incredible support throughout our whole project,” says Kreutzer. “They were very invested in not only making the project a success but also making sure that we were able to grow and learn from this experience as well.”

Both technical and leadership skills are put into practice in this senior course. Many of the projects evolved over the duration of the semester as the students and organizations honed in on the most pressing problems and determined if technology would be the right solution. Then they created the plan for implementing the most suitable platform, software or strategy.

“This class may be challenging and quite time consuming, but it provides an excellent learning opportunity and experience with the local businesses, solving real-world problems,” says Zhu. “It is quite a different experience from regular in-class learning.”

“Smith seeded 15th at U.S. Amateur”

Shooting under par was at a premium during the two rounds of stroke play qualifying in the 120th U.S. Women’s Amateur at Woodmont Country Club in Maryland after a day off Tuesday between rounds due to weather.

Kate Smith shot rounds of even par and 1-over for a share of 14th place advancing to match play near the top of the qualifying leaderboard.

Smith traveled to Maryland after receiving the championship trophy of the Minnesota Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship last weekend in Stillwater - her second title in four seasons. She earned her 14th state championship title and joined 17 other women with multiple Women’s State Amateur wins.

Smith noted her mental strength on the course as the biggest key to victory and mentioned continuing that at the U.S. Am.

listen live watch live

Smith was near the top of the leaderboard after the opening nine holes on Monday with a four-birdie effort, including three in a row on holes Nos. 3-5, two par fives and a par four. She went out with a 3-under 33 after a bogey at the par-4, seventh and a birdie to answer at the par-4, eighth hole.

The back nine consisted of seven pars, a bogey at the par-4, 14th and a double on the par-4 closing hole for a 3-over 39 and even for the day.

She was back under par on the front nine of round two with two birdies, six pars and one bogey. Three early bogeys on 11, 12 and 14, all par-4’s, and a birdie at the par-5, 15th hole brought Smith in with a +2, 38 and 1-over on the day and for the qualifying rounds.

Smith is seeded 15th in match play and opens against a fellow college senior Louise Yu of Vanderbilt. Yu qualified with the 50th seed after finishing in an 11-player tie for 48th place at 5-over par.

Rachel Heck shot a 1-under 71 in the second round of stroke play to earn medalist honors. Her 36-hole total of 4-under 140 made her one of just seven players to break par in stroke play, the fewest since 2014.

Heck, 18, of Memphis, Tenn., gained national attention when she made the cut at the 2017 U.S. Women’s Open as a 15-year-old. Now three years later, she has loftier aspirations than just playing the weekend.

Heck is competing in her fourth consecutive U.S. Women’s Amateur. On Wednesday, she birdied four of her first eight holes and was one of three competitors in the 132-player field to post consecutive sub-par scores.

“The course is in perfect condition,” said Heck, an incoming freshman at Stanford University. “It’s pretty tight, so we were focusing on hitting fairways, hitting greens, not trying to do anything crazy. That’s kind of been my game plan and it’s worked out well so far.”

Three players finished two strokes behind Heck at 2-under 142 – Phoebe Brinker, Valery Plata and the fourth-ranked player in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, Emilia Migliaccio. First-round co-leader, Rachel Kuehn, rebounded from a tough start to earn the No. 8 seed. Starting on the 10th hole, she bogeyed the 11th and triple bogeyed the 12th before playing even-par golf the rest of the way.

Playing with Kuehn, defending champion Gabriela Ruffels bogeyed two of her first three holes, but played her final 15 holes bogey-free. Three birdies coming in led to a 1-under 71 and earned her the No. 6 seed in her title defense.

Other notable players to make the match-play field include first-round co-leader Riley Smyth, 2019 U.S. Women’s Open low-amateur Gina Kim and 2019 U.S. Women’s Amateur semifinalist Megha Ganne.

The biggest turnaround of the day belonged to Kajal Mistry. The 19-year-old who represented South Africa in the 2018 Women’s World Amateur Team Championship tied the low round of the day with a 3-under 69 – an improvement of 12 strokes from her opening 81. She then survived a 15-for-6 playoff with a birdie on the first playoff hole (Woodmont’s eighth) to punch her ticket into match play.

In addition to Mistry, Katherine Zhu, Auston Kim, Therese Warner, Gurleen Kaur and Haylin Harris emerged from the playoff to make match play.

The Round of 64 is scheduled to begin at 8:50 a.m. CT on Thursday, with the Golf Channel broadcast live from 3-6 p.m. CT.

Due to Tuesday’s round being postponed, the Rounds of 32 and 16 will be played on Friday, and both the quarterfinals and semifinals are scheduled for Saturday. The 36-hole championship match will take place on Sunday.
